NEW DEAN FOR MENDOZA

K.J. Martijn Cremers has been appointed Martin J. Gillen Dean of the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame by University President Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., effective July 1.

Cremers, the Bernard J. Hank Professor of Finance and interim dean of the college since July 2018, was selected from among a number of eminently qualified candidates who were considered during a six-month national search.

An internationally recognized expert in the empirical aspects of investing and corporate governance, Cremers joined the Notre Dame faculty as a professor of finance in 2012 after serving 10 years on the faculty of Yale University’s School of Management.

“Martijn is a distinguished scholar with a deep understanding of and commitment to Notre Dame’s distinctive mission,” Father Jenkins said. “He will further the Mendoza College of Business’ work of making important contributions to research, training capable graduates who will be ethical leaders and encouraging us all to ask more of business.”

As dean, Cremers will lead Mendoza’s nearly 160 faculty members, who oversee undergraduate education and a variety of professional education programs.

“Martijn is a gifted scholar, teacher and leader who brings to this position an innovative business focus, global business perspective, the highest standards of excellence and integrity and a deep understanding of and dedication to Notre Dame’s Catholic mission,” said Thomas G. Burish, Charles and Jill Fischer Provost.

Cremers said he plans to continue building upon Mendoza’s strengths in undergraduate and professional programs while focusing on ways to increase the college and its graduates’ positive impact on business and society.

“I am grateful for the trust being placed in me and committed to advancing Mendoza’s distinctive mission as a Catholic business school, where we seek to educate business leaders who contribute to human flourishing, cooperate in solidarity and compete with excellence,” Cremers said.

MEET THE CHAIRS

Mendoza’s finance and accountancy departments have new chairs.

Financial market design and trading costs expert and finance professor Robert Battalio took over as chair of the Department of Finance on Jan. 1. Battalio joined Mendoza’s faculty in 1995.

Associate professor of accountancy and KPMG Faculty Fellow Sandra Vera-Muñoz was appointed the next chair of the Department of Accountancy starting July 1. She joined Mendoza in 1994 and her research focus is corporate environmental and sustainability disclosures.

NEW BOOK

Georges Enderle, the John T. Ryan Jr. Professor of International Business Ethics, co-edited “Indigenous Sustainable Wisdom: First-Nation Know-How for Global Flourishing,” an interdisciplinary book project that explores the practical traditional wisdom of nature-based relational cultures released this spring. Co-editors included Darcia Narvaez, Four Arrows, Eugene Halton and Brian S. Collier.

READY TO LAUNCH

Young professionals and recent college grads, take note: Mendoza College of Business will roll out two new one-year residential graduate-level programs in fall 2019 aimed at equipping early career workers with specialized training in two growing fields.

The new residential Master of Science in Business Analytics prepares students to analyze massive data sets in order to solve business problems and is intended either as a “fifth year” for students just completing their undergraduate degrees or for those with limited work experience.

The new residential Master of Nonprofit Administration is aimed at those who want to enter the nonprofit sector right out of college or a post-college nonprofit placement (e.g., Peace Corps or Teach for America).

REPORT CARD TIME

Members of Mendoza’s Class of 2016 were invited to grade their business school via a 43-question alumni survey that Poets & Quants sent out to graduates of the best undergraduate business programs in the country. When P&Q compiled the responses, Mendoza took the top spot overall, with Mendoza grads giving an A+ to alumni network-related questions.

GET IN THE POOL

A trio of Mendoza research faculty members is gearing up to run a series of workplace-related studies in summer 2018 using an online tool through the Mendoza Behavioral Lab. NEW ASSOCIATE DEAN

Due to the growth in its graduate program offerings, Mendoza added a new associate dean position in January 2019. Finance teaching professor Walter Clements was appointed associate dean of Executive Education — a position that oversees all non-degree and degree programs offered by Mendoza’s Stayer Center for Executive Education. Programs include the Notre Dame Executive MBA programs in South Bend and Chicago, the Master of Science in Business Analytics-Chicago and the Master of Science in Finance-Chicago, as well as non-degree offerings.

The new associate deanship will work in collaboration with the associate dean for Graduate Programs and the associate dean for Faculty and Research.

WANTED: NON-ACCOUNTANCY MAJORS

This summer, Mendoza kicks off its Accounting Immersion Program (AIP) for students with strong quantitative skills who are interested in a Master of Science in Accountancy but lack an accounting background. The five-week program covers intermediate accounting, strategic cost management, audit and assurance services and federal taxation. Students then join the MSA cohort in the fall.
