Historic new programs during a historic year




Mendoza Launches Its First Ever Ph.D. Programs

banner hanging in the atrium of Mendoza College of BusinessThe first Ph.D. programs in Mendoza’s history will begin enrolling students in fall 2022. Two programs, the Doctor of Philosophy in Management — awarded by the Department of Management & Organization — and the Doctor of Philosophy in Analytics — awarded by the Department of IT, Analytics, and Operations — will prepare students for careers in academia at leading business schools. Additionally, students accepted into the programs will be able to develop the skills they need to work in government and industry. 

“The two first-ever doctoral programs at Mendoza not only fulfill a vision for the College that goes back at least 50 years, they also signal a new era,” said Martijn Cremers, the Martin J. Gillen Dean of the Mendoza College of Business. “The Ph.D. programs will allow our faculty to prepare the next generation of scholars and teachers and will further elevate our research culture and further advance our reputation as a top research institution.”

The new programs will prioritize developing faculty whose academic research aligns with the College’s imperative to “Grow the Good in Business” by contributing to human flourishing in solidarity with all stakeholders, especially the most vulnerable. Each program is structured to be small and cohort-based, with a strong focus on mentorship and the opportunity to work closely with faculty on academic research. 

Jason Colquitt, the Franklin D. Schurz Professor of Management, is the director of the Ph.D. in Management program and Ahmed Abbasi, the Joe and Jane Giovanini Professor of IT, Analytics, and Operations, is the director of the Ph.D. in Analytics program.





Author Kerry Temple, editor of Notre Dame Magazine, wrote in the first edition of O’Hara’s Heirs: Business Education at Notre Dame 1921-1991 that the story of the College of Business is primarily a story of its people. 

In the newly updated edition of O’Hara’s Heirs, writer Brett Beasley brings the College’s history up to date for Mendoza’s Centennial by tracing the stories of the next generations of “heirs” — the deans, professors, alumni and many others who contributed to fulfilling founding dean John Cardinal O’Hara’s charge: “The primary function of commerce is service to mankind.”

Mendoza will launch a new Master of Science in Business Analytics track in Sports Analytics in summer 2022. The one-year program offers the same baseline instruction as the existing residential MSBA while including courses in sports and human performance analytics in place of electives.

group photoAt the beginning of the academic year, Leon Jackson (EMBA ’19) returned to Mendoza with 21 men and women from underrepresented groups for a three-day immersion in accounting and finance principles with finance teaching professor Walt Clements

The class was part of the new Diversity in Leadership program at Marian University in Indianapolis, which Jackson launched during his time as executive director of strategic initiatives. The six-month program — a collaboration among Marian, Notre Dame and several other Indiana universities — is designed to help close gaps in educational attainment, wealth, skills and career opportunities for minoritized groups and to provide a path to executive leadership and entrepreneurship.
