Salt & Light

By Sally Anne Flecker | Spring 2015

In the Fall 2014 edition of Mendoza Business, we introduced a series called Salt & Light. Taken from Matthew 5:13-16, the intention of the series is to show how the people of Mendoza live out the charge of Christ to make a difference in this world.

We first featured the faculty and staff of Mendoza. This time, it’s the students’ turn.

Through them, we gain a new perspective of what it means to be a light in a dark world, a savor set against life’s bleakness. For sometimes our commitment to serve is a story already well-documented. We’ve traveled those dark valleys and learned to reach down deep to transform a tough circumstance into strength and greater faith.

But for young lives, there is also the idea of the promise they hold for the future. They may have already lived through tragedy and come out the other side. They may have turned personal loss outward and put their hand toward helping others. But it is evident in their stories that the greater light, the “saltier salt,” is possibly yet to come.

You are the salt of the earth ... You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid ... so let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. —Matthew 5:13-16
